Martha Lujan is a purpose-driven leader whose life journey laid the foundation for Beyond Barriers of Central Texas. Born in El Paso to an immigrant mother and raised in the housing projects, Martha’s earliest experiences navigating poverty, trauma, and broken systems became the very training ground for her life’s mission. With unwavering heart and grit, she turned those hardships into fuel for advocacy—becoming an unapologetic voice for those too often overlooked or silenced.
Martha is known for calling it like it is—unafraid to speak truth in rooms where power is rarely questioned. She holds systems accountable with courage and compassion, even when it costs her comfort. Over the years, she has not only navigated health, education, and social service systems herself—she’s walked alongside others with that same fire for justice, carrying a torch of resilience and hope.
Her community involvement reflects that same deep commitment. Martha currently serves on the Austin Public Health Commission and the board of the Del Valle Food Co-op, and she participated on multiple Advisory Committees for the City of Austin and local organizations focused on equity and grassroots impact like Farm Share Austin Community Advisory Commitee. She also volunteered for over a decade with Bridges to Life, a prison ministry that offers healing and restoration in correctional institutions across Texas.
Martha’s voice has resonated in many spaces—from leading Pláticas en Español on mental health with NAMI to being on the Hays Free Press for her insight and leadership in peer support in collaboration with NAMI. Her work as a systems-changer also includes her time at the UT Austin School of Nursing, where she helped launch a Resource Center in Del Valle offering food access, a clothing closet, and diabetes education in partnership with Austin Public Health.
She doesn't just understand community needs she’s lived them. Martha knows what it truly means to “meet people where they are,” in every sense of the word.
The connections she builds are transparent, genuine, and grounded in dignity. Her spirit draws in incredible people, those who teach her, inspire her, and give her the strength to keep going. They are not just the reason she continues this work they are the heart of it. Founding BBOCTX wasn’t just a milestone; it was a spiritual alignment of her purpose and path.
Today, Martha is honored to walk beside her community as a peer, a Promotora, and a systems-changer helping others rise beyond the barriers she once faced and lighting the way for those still finding their voice.
